The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Philadelphia 76ers minority owner Michael Rubin helped pave the way for LeBron James joining the team in free agency after selling his ownership stake in 2022. The NBA's rules prompted Rubin to sell his stake to avoid conflicts of interest with his apparel company, Fanatics. League officials reportedly told ownership that Rubin would be able to assist the franchise even more once freed from league tampering restrictions.

Following his departure from team ownership, Rubin expanded business ties with James through investments and a 2024 Fanatics trading card deal. That commercial partnership includes access to Fanatics' corporate helicopter, which a spokesperson confirmed James uses to commute to 76ers practices while residing in New York City.
