According to a report from Marc Stein, center Walker Kessler was determined to leave the Utah Jazz by taking the qualifying offer route and entering unrestricted free agency in 2027. Despite previous public statements expressing his desire to remain in Utah, Kessler's camp reportedly informed team officials of his intention to depart. The Jazz subsequently traded Kessler to an Los Angeles team for four first-round draft picks.
Utah had initially planned to pair Kessler with Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen under head coach Will Hardy. Jazz executive Austin Ainge stated that the organization valued Kessler and planned to keep him, but accepted the trade after receiving a significant offer. The Jazz have since replaced Kessler in their lineup with center Jusuf Nurkic.
