Bears head coach Ben Johnson’s late decision looked like a huge gamble, but he trusted his player to make him right.

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson explained that his high-risk decision to let Cairo Santos attempt a career-long 58-yard field goal was based on calculated preparation rather than pure chance. Leading the New England Patriots 27-21 with 1:34 remaining, Johnson trusted Santos after a third-down sack on Caleb Williams. Santos converted the kick, establishing a crucial two-possession advantage on the way to a 30-24 Bears victory.
Johnson noted that pregame evaluations showed the 58-yard attempt fell within the kicker's established maximum range. Santos had previously hit the upright on a 53-yard try but adjusted his aim down the middle for the longer kick after asking special teams coordinator Richard Hightower for redemption. Although Patriots quarterback Drake Maye later engineered a field-goal drive, Rome Odunze recovered an onside kick to seal the win.
