Key Things to Know
  • Mike Payton argues Detroit's 59.1% third-down conversion rate allowed is the primary issue hurting the defense.
  • The Lions allow a 60% conversion rate on third-and-7 through third-and-9 situations.
  • Detroit ranks second in the league in time to pressure on third down despite conversion struggles.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Mike Payton argues that the Detroit Lions' defense is severely hindered by allowing a 59.1% success rate on third downs through three games. While Detroit performs near league average on first and second down, only the Green Bay Packers have allowed a worse third-down rate. Payton notes the primary vulnerability occurs on medium to long distances, specifically third-and-7 through third-and-9, where opponents convert at a 60% rate.

According to Payton, costly coverage penalties by Rock Ya-Sin, Roger McCreary, and D.J. Reed have repeatedly extended drives despite effective pass-rush metrics. The Lions rank among the league leaders in third-down pressures and sacks. Payton concludes that reducing third-down conversions to roughly 50% could significantly reduce Detroit's points allowed without needing outside trades.
