Duke Carlisle never took a snap in a Green Bay regular-season game, but his name still sits in the Packers’ draft ledger from the peak of the Vince Lombardi years.
Former Green Bay Packers draft pick and Texas Longhorns quarterback Duke Carlisle has died at the age of 84. Carlisle passed away on Friday in Lockhart, Texas, following a seven-year battle with lung cancer. Selected by Green Bay in the fifth round of the 1964 NFL Draft, Carlisle never appeared in a regular-season game after an injury cut his pro career short.
Carlisle led Texas to an 11-0 season and the program's first national championship in 1963 under coach Darrell Royal. He famously defeated Roger Staubach's Navy team 28-6 in the 1964 Cotton Bowl, earning game MVP honors. Following his athletic career, Carlisle worked in investment banking and the Texas oil industry.
