The New England Patriots are evaluating internal options to replace starting right guard Michael Onwenu after he suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 that is expected to sideline him until late in the year. Head coach Mike Vrabel stated that the team will evaluate candidates in practice before deciding on a replacement to start alongside right tackle Morgan Moses.
Veteran Greg Van Roten stepped in for Onwenu against the Pittsburgh Steelers and is a primary candidate. Other internal options contending for the role include Ben Brown, Walter Rouse, and potentially rookie first-round draft pick Caleb Lomu, while starting left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker is expected to stay in his current position.
