A New York Giants' senior VP revealed the major concern they had about J.J. McCarthy, and why that's changed in a surprising way.

New York Giants senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara revealed that the franchise passed on quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL draft due to concerns over his maturity level. Speaking to the New York Post's Steve Serby, Mara stated the team loved McCarthy's skill set and leadership, but questions surrounding his mental readiness led the Giants to select wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick instead.
After a disappointing stint with the Minnesota Vikings, McCarthy was traded to New York on September 28. Mara noted that McCarthy now appears completely different, demonstrating greater maturity on and off the field. With rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart sidelined by a season-ending knee injury, McCarthy started and won his debut against the Houston Texans under head coach John Harbaugh.
