Lane Johnson's surprise retirement won't just have ramifications on the Philadelphia Eagles' on-field product. It also comes with financial considerations.
The Philadelphia Eagles plan to keep offensive tackle Lane Johnson on their active 53-man roster throughout the season despite his recent retirement. PhillyVoice reports that maintaining his roster status keeps the door open for a potential return this season, though a comeback remains unlikely. Johnson previously announced in August that the 2026 campaign would serve as his final season in the NFL.
Retaining Johnson on the roster provides significant financial advantages for the franchise. The move allows the team to handle Johnson's contract as if he played out the 2026 season, enabling them to process his retirement paperwork after June 1, 2027. Consequently, the Eagles will delay major salary cap impacts until 2027 and 2028, despite sacrificing an active roster spot.
