Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is reportedly pushing to return for the October 18 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mayfield suffered a thumb injury during Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, with head coach Todd Bowles initially announcing on September 28 that he would miss at least three weeks. According to NFL insider James Palmer, Mayfield's stitches were removed, but his status depends on medical clearance, healing, pain tolerance, and grip.
Undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels stepped in to replace Mayfield and led Tampa Bay to a 24-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Historically, Mayfield has struggled against Pittsburgh, posting a 2-5 regular-season record and suffering 29 sacks during his tenure with the Cleveland Browns.
