The overwhelming assumption after DeShon Elliott was activated from IR was that he would quickly work his way back into the starting lineup and play a lion’s share of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive snaps. It hasn’t worked out that way…

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo, Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott faces a tough challenge regaining his starting role over Robert Spears-Jennings. Despite Elliott returning from injured reserve, Spears-Jennings has maintained a significant role, logging 60 defensive snaps to Elliott's 43 across the past two games following his first career start in Week 7.
Steelers coaches, including Joe Whitt Jr., have highly praised Spears-Jennings' speed and fit in defensive coordinator Patrick Graham's heavy-zone system. Writer Ross McCorkle notes that maintaining a limited snap count may also benefit Elliott, who is working back from a serious injury suffered a year ago.
