Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers has left the program amid a probe into a player's collapse. Avalanche assistant Dave Hakstol was hired as the new coach.

Arizona State men's hockey coach Greg Powers has mutually agreed to leave the program amid an ongoing investigation into the collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20. The university announced Thursday that former NHL and college head coach Dave Hakstol has been hired to replace Powers.
Mayich suffered exertional heat stroke that restricted oxygen to his brain and remains hospitalized with recovery unlikely, according to his family's attorney. An internal review revealed that the coaching staff had not submitted a required training plan prior to the workout.
