The Carolina Hurricanes will be without captain Jordan Staal for a significant stretch after the veteran center suffered a torn calf muscle before Sunday’s game in Philadelphia.
Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal is expected to miss one to two months after suffering a torn calf muscle. Head coach Rod Brind'Amour announced the long-term injury on Tuesday following a pregame skate. Staal sustained what Brind'Amour described as a "freak" injury prior to Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers, which caused him to miss the contest.
The Hurricanes will now have to adjust their center depth and cover the defensive responsibilities usually handled by Staal. The team plans to adopt a next-man-up approach to remain competitive while their captain recovers, as no exact return date has been established beyond the initial multi-week estimate.
