Friedman explains the key difference between Quinn Hughes’ situation with the Wild and Mikko Rantanen’s trade by the Hurricanes.

Elliotte Friedman reported that the primary difference between Quinn Hughes' uncertain status with the Minnesota Wild and Mikko Rantanen's past situation with the Carolina Hurricanes is trade flexibility. While Rantanen provided Carolina with a list of preferred teams he would sign an extension with before being moved to the Dallas Stars, Hughes has shown no inclination to provide a similar list or give guarantees.
According to Friedman, this lack of commitment complicates trade discussions for Minnesota, as acquiring teams face the risk of Hughes leaving in free agency. The Wild must now weigh attempting a championship run with Hughes on the roster against exploring trade options without leverage.
