Newly extended Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat has taken on a leadership role since arriving in 2023, and there remains the possibility of him receiving a formal leadership role by wearing a letter on his jersey.

Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat stated that potentially serving as team captain would be a huge honor following his new contract extension. DeBrincat signed a seven-year, $91 million contract extension that keeps him with Detroit through the 2033-34 season, addressing potential free agency concerns. The Red Wings entered the season without a captain after Dylan Larkin's trade request, leaving Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond as alternate captains.
Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff stated that the organization will remain patient regarding official leadership designations, though DeBrincat is already part of the core leadership group. Head coach Todd McLellan praised DeBrincat's balanced leadership approach, describing him as a glue guy who leads by example on the ice and speaks up when necessary.
