Defenseman Claire Thompson has stepped away from professional hockey to pursue her medical studies in orthopedic surgery. The 28-year-old indicated that she will return to New York University to resume her education, stating that a career in medicine has always been an overarching goal for her.
Thompson previously won an Olympic gold medal with Canada and claimed a PWHL championship with Minnesota. While her departure is notable, the report notes that several other athletes have previously retired early from professional sports to pursue medical careers and other vocations.
