The Los Angeles Kings secured their first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night. After falling behind 2-0 early in the first period, the Kings responded with two goals in 31 seconds from Adrian Kempe and Artemi Panarin. Erik Gustafsson later gave Los Angeles the lead in the third period before Kempe added another and Scott Laughton sealed the game with an empty-net goal.
Despite earning the breakthrough victory, the Kings lost center Quinton Byfield in the first period to an upper-body injury. Head coach Peter Laviolette reported that Byfield will undergo medical evaluation on Wednesday. Goaltender Darcy Kuemper stopped 30 shots to help preserve the victory, which marked Laviolette's first win in his latest NHL head coaching tenure.
