The Minnesota Wild knew when they traded for Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks that a contract extension would be a high priority. They paid a huge price for the superstar defenseman, and his contract only ran through the end…

The Minnesota Wild face growing uncertainty over defenseman Quinn Hughes, who is entering the final year of his contract without having agreed to an extension. According to The Athletic's Harman Dayal, Hughes has been identified as a potential late-season trade candidate if the Wild are unable to secure a long-term deal. The situation presents a major risk for Minnesota, which gave up significant assets to acquire him from the Vancouver Canucks.
Dayal reports that Hughes may take a wait-and-see approach to assess whether Minnesota can consistently compete in the Central Division. If contract talks fail to progress, general manager Bill Guerin may have to consider trading Hughes before the deadline rather than risk losing him in free agency. The New Jersey Devils, where Hughes' brothers Jack and Luke play, are viewed as a potential trade destination.
