With Igor Shesterkin sidelined long-term, the New York Rangers could target Montreal Canadiens netminder Samuel Montembeault as an affordable trade solution.

Jacob Tye of A Winning Habit argues that the Montreal Canadiens could trade goaltender Sam Montembeault to the New York Rangers. The Rangers face significant injury troubles in the net, with starter Igor Shesterkin sidelined for the season with a knee injury and backup Joonas Korpisalo also injured. This has left New York relying heavily on 24-year-old third-string netminder Dylan Garand.
Tye suggests Montembeault is expendable for Montreal General Manager Kent Hughes due to the emergence of Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler, alongside AHL depth in Kaapo Kahkonen. Montembeault carries an expiring $3.15 million salary cap hit, which Tye believes makes him an ideal rental candidate who could yield future draft capital for Montreal.
