The Montreal Canadiens are hoping that when Sam Montembeault comes back, he can be the backup to Jakob Dobes so Jacob Fowler can develop.

The Montreal Canadiens are managing their goaltending rotation after Sam Montembeault suffered an injury during Wednesday's practice, sidelining him for 10 to 14 days according to head coach Martin St. Louis. Montreal recalled Jacob Fowler from the AHL Laval Rocket to step in, though the club originally entered the campaign intending for Montembeault to serve as the primary backup behind starter Jakub Dobes.
According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Canadiens prefer to keep Montembeault backing up Dobes once healthy so Fowler can receive regular playing time and continue developing in the minors. While Fowler played well in a 5-2 defeat to the Nashville Predators, Montreal's ideal scenario remains stabilizing the crease with Dobes and Montembeault.
