A pair of former NCAA players have found their wallets to be a tad—or a lot—lighter, thanks to the NHL Department of Player Safety.
New Jersey Devils forward Evan Rodrigues was fined $5,000 by the NHL Department of Player Safety for high-sticking Vancouver forward Marco Rossi. The incident occurred during New Jersey's 4-1 home victory on Saturday prior to a second-period faceoff at center ice. Rodrigues initially received a double minor on the play, and the fine represents the maximum allowable amount under league rules.
The fine money will go directly to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Additionally, Chicago Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar received a two-game suspension and forfeited $68,041 in salary for an illegal check to the head of New York Islanders captain Bo Horvat during Thursday's 4-1 loss.
