The Islanders overcame a horrible start to make it a game, a winnable game even, against the defending Cup champion Hurricanes, but in the end mistakes killed them on the way to a loss The Islanders hadn’t been in action…

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 after an late third-period push. Carolina opened with a quick 2-0 advantage before New York rallied to tie the game 3-3 behind goals from Brayden Schenn and Victor Eklund. William Carrier broke the deadlock with 5:08 remaining by converting a rebound for the game-winning goal, followed by an empty-netter from Jalen Chatfield.
Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 34 saves against Carolina's heavy shot volume. Despite successfully killing key penalties, New York failed to score on four power-play opportunities. Prior to the game, the Islanders officially signed defenseman Ben Hutton to strengthen their blue-line depth following a professional tryout.
