Less than ideal is the sugar-coated way to describe the Philadelphia Flyers’ opening night loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on…

The Philadelphia Flyers suffered an embarrassing 7-0 defeat against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night to open their 2026-27 NHL regular season. The loss matched the worst opening-night defeat in franchise history, previously set in 1971 against the Los Angeles Kings. Philly Hockey Now described the team's display as uninspired, noting Pittsburgh outplayed, outworked, and outscored the Flyers throughout the contest.
Head coach Rick Tocchet sharply criticized the performance, calling it the worst defensive zone play he had witnessed during his tenure. Goaltender Dan Vladar struggled behind a disjointed defense after missing most of the preseason with an injury. Philly Hockey Now noted that Matvei Michkov was a rare bright spot for Philadelphia, which prepares for a quick turnaround against the New Jersey Devils.
