Any time a big trade happens in the NHL, we, the sentient blog Broad Street Hockey, immediately ask one thing: how does this affect the Philadelphia Flyers? That’s especially the case when that trade occurs in the Metropolitan Division The…

Ryan Gilbert of Broad Street Hockey argues that the New Jersey Devils' acquisition of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets presents both challenges and long-term advantages for the Philadelphia Flyers. In exchange for Hellebuyck, New Jersey sent Dawson Mercer, Alexander Command, Nick Bjugstad, Nico Daws, and two draft picks to Winnipeg. Gilbert notes that while the upgrade makes New Jersey significantly stronger in the Metropolitan Division immediately, it does not drastically disrupt the rebuilding Flyers.
Gilbert points out that Hellebuyck is 33 years old with an $8.5 million cap hit through 2031, arguing that New Jersey sacrificed valuable future assets and salary cap flexibility to pursue immediate success. The piece suggests that the Flyers are better served by staying out of the sweepstakes, focusing on developing their current roster and tandem of Dan Vladar and Joseph Woll, and waiting for the right moment to acquire an elite center or defenseman.
