Penguins Prospect Report: Pickering’s Final Steps, Learning to Attack

Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Owen Pickering is working toward securing a full-time NHL spot as he begins the 2026-2027 season. The 22-year-old defenseman, selected 21st overall in the 2022 draft, is focusing on refining his decision-making, learning when to join offensive rushes, and utilizing his 6-foot-5 frame effectively without sacrificing defensive structure.

Pickering produced 28 points in 68 AHL games during the 2025-2026 campaign alongside 29 career NHL appearances. Playing alongside prospect Harrison Brunicke for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pickering emphasized that building coaching trust through reliable defensive zone coverage remains the foundation for earning regular attacking opportunities.
