The move comes two days after players asked for it pending further investigation into the workout that left teammate on life support.

Arizona State has placed men's hockey coach Greg Powers on paid leave following an August 20 workout that left sophomore player Matthew Mayich on life support. The decision came two days after seven players anonymously sent a letter to university president Michael Crow demanding the coaching staff's removal over retaliation fears. Assistant coach Mike Corbett was named temporary head coach for the team's opening games.
Mayich, 21, suffered exertional heat stroke during the session led by a former Green Beret and is not expected to recover. While Powers stated his support for the administrative leave to allow an independent review, family representatives and Arizona senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego have demanded a full outside investigation.
