Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has returned to Sweden to practice with former team Frolunda HC amid stalled contract negotiations. The 23-year-old restricted free agent remains unsigned as Detroit approaches its season opener against the New York Rangers. Edvinsson previously attended training camp without a contract before stepping away as regular-season preparations intensified.
Negotiations have reportedly been complicated by Detroit's general manager transition following Steve Yzerman's departure in July, with Shawn Horcoff currently serving as interim general manager. In response to Edvinsson's absence, the Red Wings recently claimed defenseman Andreas Englund off waivers from the Calgary Flames to bolster their blue line.
