Despite some evident bright spots for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Saturday night's 3-2 loss to Ottawa was disappointing.

The Ottawa Senators defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night, handing Toronto their second defeat in three games to open the season. Auston Matthews scored his first goal of the year and recent acquisition Kirill Marchenko netted a power-play goal to give Toronto a temporary 2-1 lead. However, Ottawa rallied back, with Stephen Halliday scoring the game-winning goal in the third period.
Nestor Quixtan argues that while the top line provided offense and Sergei Bobrovsky made key saves, the Maple Leafs ultimately lacked necessary secondary scoring. Quixtan also notes that Toronto suffered from costly defensive mistakes, specifically highlighting missed coverage by Oliver Ekman-Larsson, alongside a power-play unit that finished 1-for-4 and failed to record a shot during a crucial third-period man advantage.
