Last night marked the first Saturday night of the 2026–2027 National Hockey League season, with 26 teams in action across 13 games. There were several highlights aside from the Montreal Canadiens' incredible—though ultimately incomplete—comeback.
Kirill Marchenko scored his first goal as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs during a power play against the Ottawa Senators. Despite his milestone tally on home ice, Toronto fell 3–2 in regulation to Ottawa on the opening Saturday night of the NHL season.
Elsewhere across the league, the Edmonton Oilers earned a 3–1 win over the Seattle Kraken under coach Mike Babcock. The Colorado Avalanche routed the St. Louis Blues 6–1 behind Artturi Lehkonen, the New York Islanders blanked the New Jersey Devils 6–0 featuring Victor Eklund's first NHL goal, and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings 6–5 in overtime.
