Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Roy suffered a lower-body injury during the team's 3-1 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Head coach Spencer Carbery confirmed the injury prevented Roy from playing in the third period. Carbery stated that Roy will undergo further medical evaluation upon the team's return to Washington, D.C.
The 3-1 loss marked Washington's first regulation defeat of the 2026-27 NHL regular season. Roy, who signed a six-year, $34.5 million contract with the Capitals in July 2024, had averaged 18:25 of ice time across the team's first two games of the campaign.
