After scoring a team-leading 32 goals last season, how will Ovi follow up his goal totals in the 2026-27 season?

Writer Ben Sumner predicts that Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin will score 26 goals during the 2026-27 NHL season. The projection comes after Ovechkin tallied 32 goals the previous season to lead his team, a year after breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal-scoring record. Sumner notes that the upcoming campaign could potentially be the 41-year-old winger's final year in the league.
Sumner argues that Ovechkin's scoring pace will decline due to several factors, including reduced ice time and less power-play usage. Additionally, Sumner expects fewer empty-net scoring opportunities and projects Ovechkin to appear in approximately 70 games rather than a full regular-season schedule.
