So what happens with Walker and Hudson Young and the Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders now?
The Sydney Roosters have withdrawn their contract extension offer for premiership-winning halfback Sam Walker after negotiations broke down on Monday. Walker's management reportedly sought further adjustments to a proposed three-year deal worth around $1.4 million per season, prompting the club to pull the offer. Roosters chairman Nick Politis is reportedly open to letting the 24-year-old leave immediately if he secures a deal elsewhere for 2027.
Walker's manager, Clinton Schifcofske, confirmed the sides failed to reach an agreement, noting Walker remains focused on representing Australia and playing for the Roosters next season. The breakdown followed a similar incident earlier that day, when the Canberra Raiders pulled a historic five-year contract offer for back-rower Hudson Young after contract talks stalled past a set deadline.
