Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga admitted he was not prepared when first given the club captaincy at age 23 in 2022. Ahead of Newcastle's preliminary final against Penrith, Ponga credited coach Justin Holbrook with providing clarity and encouragement during their 2026 pre-season discussions, allowing him to lead effectively.
Ponga expressed that he is currently playing his most consistent football as a grounded leader. He also reaffirmed his long-term commitment to Newcastle by signing an extension through at least the end of 2030, which includes a club option for two further seasons.
