He has been granted permission to speak with rival clubs a week early.

Canterbury Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould has confirmed that utility Matt Burton was granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs ahead of the official November 1 deadline. Although Burton remains contracted through the end of the 2027 season, his management requested an early opportunity to explore his market value before pre-season training begins.
Gould stated that the Bulldogs retain last rights and emphasized that neither party has discussed financial terms yet. Clubs reportedly linked to Burton include the Parramatta Eels, Perth Bears, and PNG Chiefs, while Canterbury remains keen to extend his tenure if a fair valuation is agreed upon.
