He was granted an early release from the Canberra Raiders.

Canberra Raiders hooker Tom Starling has officially signed a three-year permanent contract with Super League club St Helens starting next season. The 28-year-old was granted an early release from Canberra after falling down the pecking order behind Owen Pattie. Starling highlighted the chance to play under coach Kevin Walters as a decisive factor in making the move to England.
However, Starling's arrival creates an overseas player dilemma for St Helens, pushing their squad to 11 foreign players against the Super League limit of 10. The club must offload at least one overseas player to accommodate him, with Shane Wright and Nene Macdonald reported as potential candidates to depart.
