The Chiefs’ have also received criticism about tax-free incentives.

PNG Chiefs head coach Willie Peters has defended the club's recruitment drive and tax-free contract incentives following public backlash. Peters, who signed a four-year deal through the 2030 season after departing Super League side Hull KR, stated he remains unbothered by outside criticism as he focuses on assembling a competitive roster for the franchise's 2028 debut.
Supported by a ten-year, $600 million agreement between the NRL and the Australian Government, the Chiefs have already signed Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston, Matty Lees, Connor Watson, Brian To'o, Zac Lomax, and Joseph Manu. Peters confirmed the club's immediate focus is securing a halfback and expressed strong interest in Canberra Raiders back-rower Hudson Young.
