Rassie Erasmus was right to make André Esterhuizen Springbok captain against Australia, but wrong to shut down questions about an incident from his schoolboy years, writes @mark_keohane

Writing for the Sunday Times, Mark Keohane argues that Springbok management made a mistake by shutting down questions regarding André Esterhuizen's past schoolboy racial slur after naming him captain against Australia in Perth. While Keohane supports Rassie Erasmus's decision to appoint Esterhuizen based on his leadership and performances, he contends that silencing journalists ultimately harmed the player rather than protecting him.
Keohane states that blocking media questions denied Esterhuizen the chance to address the 2012 incident, demonstrate his personal growth, and showcase his redemption. He highlights Esterhuizen's career at Harlequins and the Sharks, arguing the Springboks missed an opportunity to display accountability and show that people can learn from serious past mistakes.
