Nic Hill says he would rather lose games than recruit rugby players.

Christchurch Boys' High School headmaster Nic Hill has urged secondary schools to halt recruiting boys for First XV rugby and other sports. Hill presented the challenge to members of the South Island Boys' School Network, calling for a collective agreement to cease athletic recruitment. He warned that schoolboy rugby has evolved into an arms race driven by money, ego, and recruitment rather than educational purpose.
Hill expressed disappointment that fellow network headmasters have not yet agreed to commit to the proposed ban. He stated that Christchurch Boys' High School prohibits sports-based recruitment and does not offer sporting scholarships. Hill emphasized that school sport should develop responsibility rather than entitlement, accepting that his school might lose games by maintaining its current stance.
