UPDATE: New Zealand's High Court has knocked back an application for an interim injunction on the PNG Chiefs NRL franchise using its name in the country.

New Zealand's High Court has rejected New Zealand Rugby's application for an interim injunction against the NRL's PNG Chiefs using the name in New Zealand. NZR had filed for the injunction ahead of the team's planned logo and jersey reveal in Port Moresby, claiming the moniker harms the Super Rugby Pacific Chiefs brand.
The judge dismissed the request after hearing that an injunction could hinder the expansion team's player recruitment ahead of its 2028 debut. NZR confirmed the broader trademark case remains ongoing.
