Arthur Gea defeated Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on his Masters 1000 debut. The 21-year-old French player, ranked 56th, followed up his third-round upset over Ben Shelton by overcoming the 13th-seeded Czech in straight sets.
The victory secures Gea a top-50 debut at a projected ranking of No. 44 or better, having started the season ranked No. 241. The result ended Mensik's 21-match winning streak on hard courts against opponents ranked outside the top 50.
