The Canadian learned about the passing of her maternal grandfather on the day of the final. Despite mounting a comeback from a set and 4-0 down, Fernandez was defeated 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 by Diana Shnaider in the WTA 500 final.

During the trophy ceremony, Fernandez praised Shnaider before sharing a tearful tribute thanking her family and her late grandfather. Champion Shnaider commended Fernandez for her strong Asian swing, which featured a title in Singapore and a runner-up finish in Ningbo.
