The Mercedes team has taken a big swing by introducing a substantial aerodynamic update package at a circuit Formula 1 hasn't visited since 2017. Has it missed?Probably not – but, because the upgrade is a major one, Mercedes has committed…

Mercedes faced unexpected performance struggles during qualifying at Sepang after introducing a substantial aerodynamic upgrade package on both W17 cars. The team was unable to conduct back-to-back tests against the previous specification due to major redesigns in the floor, sidepods, and cooling architecture. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth following a compromised tire strategy in Q2, while George Russell placed eighth, describing the new update's real-world impact as a big question mark.
Team principal Toto Wolff stated that the car suffered from excessive drag on straights and severe low-speed understeer, behaviors not observed earlier in the season. Mercedes also struggled severely with Sepang's unusually abrasive asphalt surface. Although simulation data suggested the update was an improvement, both drivers and team management acknowledged that the car's handling and lap times failed to meet expectations in qualifying.
