The University of Maryland has suspended its tennis club after program materials containing racist imagery were distributed to rival teams before a fall tournament. The emailed materials depicted Ku Klux Klan hoods placed over the Maryland state flag, leading the team to forfeit all its matches during the event at College Park. The university expressed deep regret and referred the incident to campus police.
Recipients of the material included Howard University, an HBCU whose team called the graphic a symbol of white supremacy and urged further accountability. While Maryland's Recreation and Wellness division issued apologies, Howard University reaffirmed that it will remain engaged with Maryland officials as the investigation continues.
