The Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have broken off contract talks, sources told NFL Network, after attempting to work out a long-term deal for the first few weeks of the season.

The Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta have broken off long-term contract extension talks after failing to reach an agreement during the opening weeks of the season. Following unsuccessful negotiations on Friday and Saturday, both parties decided to pause discussions so LaPorta can focus entirely on the field, leaving any potential extension until the upcoming offseason.
Barring a breakthrough, the 25-year-old is slated to become a free agent in 2027, though Detroit could utilize the franchise tag. LaPorta, represented by agent Jack Bechta, sought a deal comparable to Tucker Kraft's recent four-year, $75 million extension with the Green Bay Packers.
