The Story in 60 Seconds

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts. General manager John Lynch completed the move following Indianapolis's decision to fire general manager Chris Ballard. The transaction brings Buckner back to San Francisco, where he originally played for four seasons after being selected in the 2016 NFL Draft before being traded to the Colts in 2020.

Buckner rejoins a roster that features former teammates Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Dre Greenlaw. Writer Peter Panacy reports that the addition strengthens San Francisco's defensive line alongside Osa Odighizuwa and Gracen Halton as the team pursues a Super Bowl contention push.
