The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman Chris Tanev on injured reserve and recalled Marshall Rifai from the AHL's Toronto Marlies. Tanev sustained an upper-body injury during Saturday's game against the Colorado Avalanche and is expected to be sidelined for at least one week.
With Tanev out, Nick Blankenburg is likely to step into a regular role on defense. Rifai, who is playing on an $850,000 contract, joins the NHL roster as an extra defenseman without causing significant salary cap concerns for the Maple Leafs.
