Arizona State has asked a former chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court to lead an independent review of the collapse of hockey player Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout in August.

Arizona State University has requested former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Scott Bales to lead an independent review following the collapse of 21-year-old hockey player Matthew Mayich. Mayich suffered an exertional heat stroke during an outdoor August workout and is unlikely to recover, according to his family's attorney. The review will focus on policies, procedures, and outside consultants involved in outdoor athletic activities, with completion expected by early December.
Mayich's family expressed concern regarding the scope of the inquiry, demanding an investigation into accountability rather than just future policy recommendations. Prior to the review announcement, ASU placed hockey coach Greg Powers on administrative leave following requests from players and Mayich's family.
