What the Maple Leafs can do now is summon urgency as they enter Week 4 of 2026-27 in the same spot they finished 2025-26: last place in the Atlantic Division.

The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped to last place in the Atlantic Division following a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday. The defeat marked Toronto's third consecutive loss, moving their record to 3-4-2 on the season. Colton Sissons scored Toronto's lone goal, while New York captain Bo Horvat scored the game-winner and added an assist to lead the visiting Islanders to victory.
Toronto struggled offensively despite the Islanders losing forwards Matias Maccelli and Cal Ritchie to first-period injuries. Maple Leafs head coach Jim Hiller and captain Auston Matthews both lamented the team's inability to penetrate the inside of the ice, as Toronto went 0-for-3 on the power play. Toronto faces back-to-back games against San Jose and Columbus next.
