New Tennis Australia chief executive and tournament director Andrew Abdo defended his credentials against critics on Thursday, stating he brings fresh perspective and leadership experience to the sport. Speaking at a launch event in Melbourne, Abdo outlined plans for the 2027 Australian Open to improve fan comfort, including capping day pass sales, tripling shaded areas, and adding a 700-seat temporary grandstand.
The launch was marred by a gaffe when Abdo mistakenly referred to men's world No. 1 Jannik Sinner as "Jacob Sinner," later clarifying to reporters that he knows Sinner's name. The former NRL CEO has faced early scrutiny, having previously drawn backlash for suggesting men's grand slam matches could be shortened from best-of-five sets.
