Australia secured their World Cup semifinal spot with an unconvincing 36-22 victory over Fiji at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Despite entering as heavy favorites, the Kangaroos trailed twice during the contest before Tom Trbojevic scored a rapid second-half hat-trick to lead Australia to the top of Group A.
Fiji pushed the hosts hard behind a hat-trick from winger Semi Valemei and another try from Taane Milne. Australia responded with additional tries from Kotoni Staggs, Sam Walker, and Jacob Preston, while Walker added six goals to eventually pull away in the closing stages.
