The Lions have confirmed the sudden death of 31-year-old lock Hyron Andrews while on tour in France. The former South Africa Under-20s player was found unresponsive in a hotel shower cubicle on Friday morning, and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him. Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli and European Professional Club Rugby released statements expressing deep sorrow and offering heartfelt condolences to his wife, Maiglin, and their two young sons.
Andrews previously made 77 appearances for the Sharks and played 45 times for Sale Sharks before joining the Lions this season. The Lions squad decided to proceed with their Investec Champions Cup match against Stade Rochelais on Saturday in Andrews' honor, with a moment of silence scheduled across all EPCR matches this weekend.
